History

This stone circle is part of a complex of five in this immediate locality, dating back to the new stone age, 2250 B.C. During the course of excavation in 1962, the cairn and stone row were uncovered from the bogland. The cairn yielded the expected artefacts, of flint scrapers and pottery sherds, but was oddly lacking the usual human remains in any form. The purpose of the circle is unknown but probably involved that of religious practices, astronomical observations and calendar functions.
