Shronebirrane Stone Circle

Location: Shronebirrane, Co. Kerry

Classification: Multiple Stone Circle

SMR Code: KE108-022----

Rating:

This Multiple Stone Circle stands in a beautiful valley surrounded by steep rocky hills but unfortunately close to a modern built house. 9 out of an original 13 stones remain with one fallen and another broken and only one of the portal stones in situ. Nevertheless, this is a fine example of a multiple stone circle in a beautiful surrounding (excepting the close proximity of the house).

History

The Stone Circles of West Cork and Kerry belong in the Mid-to-Late Bronze Age, their most recent postulated date range being c.1650 - c.800 BC. It is thought they were designed primarily for astronomical and calendrical purposes. However, ritual deposits often containing cremated human remains have been found at many the monuments, suggesting that their intended function goes beyond the practical, into the sacred and religious realms.
