History

Single standing stones, also known as menhirs, are found in every part of Ireland. They functioned as prehistoric burial markers, commemorative monuments, indicators of routeways or boundaries and date from the Bronze and Iron Ages (c. 2400 BC - 500 AD) Over a thousand of these monuments still survive in Ireland today, however, 2000 years ago there may have been at least ten times as many.
