Stone of the Tree

Location: Grange, Lough Gur, Co. Limerick

Classification: Standing Stone

SMR Code: LI032-007----

Rating:

This standing stone is about 1.5m tall and is orientated NE-SW and maybe in line with the summer solstice along with the circle, judging by its alignment. The stone has mythical associations and is said to represent the mythical tree that grows at the bottom of the nearby Lough. Its eroded form, covered in mosses, does resemble a trunkless tree and it easy to see where the association may come from.

Folklore

It is believed to be part of a giant spirit tree that exists beneath Lough Gur which is supposed to reveal itself every 7 years. This is most likely a representation of the Celtic Tree of Life or Yggdrasil and it is said that it has the power to re-grow all the trees in Ireland if prayed to.
