History

A Ceremonial Enclosure is a large, roughly circular area, usually at least 100m in diameter, enclosed by a bank and internal fosse. These can date from the later Bronze Age to the Iron Age (c. 1200 BC - AD 400). Ceremonial Enclosures served to delineate ceremonial areas for ritual and sometimes burial practices. They seem to demonstrate a fundamental human desire to make physical boundaries around spaces. Frequently associated with barrows.
