Carrowmore - Tomb 52

Carrowmore - Tomb 52

Location: Carrowmore, Co. Sligo

Classification: Passage Tomb

SMR Code: SL014-209018-

Rating:

A well preseved tomb with an intact dolmen. Clues may be found at this site as to the original method of dolmen construction. Five upright chamber stones appear to have been assembled first, strengthened by stone packing at the base. A ramp of earth and stones may have been used to raise the capstone and can still be seen. Another feature of Tomb 52 is the placement of two portal stones in front of the dolmen, thought to be an example of a ceremonial or symbolic passage. Like most of the monuments in Carrowmore, it is aligned towards the area of the central tomb.

History

The origins of the Carrowmore monuments reach far into prehistory - the most ancient among them is close to 6,000 years old. The Cúil Irra peninsula, surrounded by sea and mountains, was the centre of a very rich area during the Neolithic. Carrowmore, at the very centre of the peninsula, would have had a significant symbolic role for the people living here. This was the place chosen as the sacred and religious centre for the population.
