Location: Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo

Classification: Passage Tomb

SMR Code: SL040-089----

Rating:

Cairn G is situated on the North slope of Barrnabinnia, one of the ridges that form the Bricklieve Mountains and is the first tomb along the trail from the car park. A circular cairn (diameter 18-20m, height 3m) covers a well-preserved cruciform passage tomb opening to the Northwest. A roof box sits above the entrance that allows light to reach the far end of the central chamber at sunset during the summer solstice. The interior of the tomb has a cruciform arrangement, with a short passage (2m) leading to the central chamber (1.7m x 1.9m). Opening off the central chamber are 2 side chambers and an end chamber. The tomb is constructed of tall, generally pillar-like uprights, supporting a series of lintels and oversailing corbels capped by a large flat slab above the main chamber.
