Carrowkeel - Cairn K

Carrowkeel - Cairn K

Location: Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo

Classification: Passage Tomb

SMR Code: SL040-093----

Rating:

A round cairn, roughly 22m in diameter and 3.5m high, covers a well-preserved cruciform passage tomb opening to the northwest. The tomb itself consists of a 4.5m long passage leading to a tall chamber 1.4m long x 1.9m wide. There are two opposed side-chambers and an end-chamber. The tomb is constructed of orthostats with dry-wall infill which support a series of lintels, a number of which are now cracked, and oversailing corbels capped by a large flat slab above the main chamber. The orientation of the passage seems to point toward the massive Medb's Cairn on the summit of Knocknarea some 25 km (15.5 miles) away.

History

The items found during the excavation of Cairn K in 1911 were typical of the finds in the other cairns: pieces of the neolithic pottery, known as Carrowkeel Ware and a mixture of cremated and unburned human remains, chalk balls, antler pins and pendants.
