Carrowkeel - Cairn E

Carrowkeel - Cairn E

Location: Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo

Classification: Passage Tomb

SMR Code: SL040-095----

Rating:

Cairn E which stands on the top of the Carn Mor ridge, is a most unusual structure, unique among the other monuments at Carrowkeel. Measuring 35 metres long and 10 metres wide, it is a composite or hybrid of a court cairn and passage grave. At the northern end of the cairn there is a roofless passage with a cruciform chamber which, like Cairns B and K, is aligned to Queen Maeve's Cairn atop Knocknarea 25 km away. At the southern end of the cairn there are three large orthostats which form the unique court-like structure which sets Cairn-E apart from the other cairns at Carrowkeel.

History

Beginning around 3,500 BC, Cairn-E was probably built in stages and expanded over time, the 1911 excavation found a small secondary cist in the body of the cairn, possibly dating to the Bronze age.
