Druids Altar

Druids Altar

Location: Coolcoe, Co. Leitrim

Classification: Megalithic Structure

SMR Code: LE036-009----

Rating:

Located in the wooded grounds of the Lough Rinn Castle Estate in Co. Leitrim is this mysterious megalith. The name ‘Druids Altar’ comes from the Victorian obsession with all things druidic and even the small hill on which it stands is known as ‘Druids Hill. It is thought by some to be a Cist-tomb with an attached standing stone. A roof slab 1.8 metres square is supported on low stones to form a small chamber (the cist). Adjoining the east end and leaning away from the cist is a round-topped slab 2.2 metres tall and 1.3 metres wide; which gives this megalith the appearance of a chair rather than an altar.
