Location: Cohaw, Co. Cavan

Classification: Court Tomb

SMR Code: CV018-005----

Rating:

Cohaw is a neolithic double court tomb located 4 kilometres south-east of Cootehill, County Cavan. Originally built as two court tombs adjacent to each other in a north-south alignment, both tombs have two chambers each. A fifth chamber was then built between the tombs giving the appearance of a dual court tomb with five chambers. The court to the south is almost a full circle in shape, while the one to the north is u-shaped. In the north court, two socket holes can be seen that would have once held the giant pillar-stones. Both tombs are surrounded by a 25-metre-long cairn.

History

Each court tomb was erected initially with two chambers, subsequently, a 5th chamber was built in the centre joining both tombs. When the site was excavated in 1949, the cremated remains of three people and a Neolithic pottery bowl were discovered. Cohaw is known locally as the "Giant's Grave".
