Wedge Tomb of the box style typical the Burren. The large, single roof stone is over 3m in length and much of the cairn survives. All the slabs forming the walls are present. The east end (which is the front) was blocked by two slabs each covering one half of the entrance. This is a very common feature of the other tombs in the locale. One of these stones has been pulled forward in order to gain access. The grass-covered roof has been displaced slightly, but the gallery is essentially still intact.

History

Wedge Tombs are so named because the burial chamber narrows at one end (usually decreasing both in height and width from west to east), producing a wedge shape in elevation. An antechamber is separated from the burial area by a simple jamb or sill, and the doorway generally faces west. Wedge tombs were built between the Irish late Neolithic and early Bronze Ages (c. 2500BC to 2000BC). Today, between 500 and 550 known wedge tombs survive in Ireland and are found predominantly in the west and northwest of the country.
