Uragh Stone Circle

Uragh Stone Circle

Location: Uragh, Co. Kerry

Classification: Five Stone Circle

SMR Code: KE101-012001-

Rating:

This superb stone circle with a massive 3m high standing stone right beside it, is situated between the lakes of Clooneen and Inchiquin in the Gleninchaquin Park. It is surrounded by mountains on nearly all sides with waterfalls cascading into the lake opposite the monument. The circle itself is a classic 5 stone arrangement made up of five 1m x 1.5m slabs forming a 2.5m diameter hexagon with a massive 3.5m high standing stone right next to it. This is without doubt one of the most visually stunning stone circles in the country and there is a deep almost primal feel to this monument. The fact that the landscape that surrounds the monument is devoid of any signs of modernity, means we can still see it as the ancients saw it over 3000 years ago.

History

Five Stone Circles, as their name suggests, consist of five stones and are generally regarded as later than the larger Multiple Stone Circles that are also found in the same geographical area. They are usually small, often barely over 2m in diameter and because of this have been regarded, by some at least, as the degenerate monuments of a dying tradition. The Cork-Kerry Stone Circle Complex of monuments belongs in the Mid-to-Late Bronze Age, their most recent postulated date range being c.1650 - c.800 BC.

Accessibility Rating: Easy - Moderate

The access road off the main road from Kenmare gets quite narrow and twisty and you have to pass through a gate to get to the path that leads up to this megalithic site. There is a small car park that can fit 4 or 5 cars.
