Connecting Myths to Monuments
A key feature of the Monumental Ireland App, is the digital mapping of the Irish myths, folklore and annual events (Solstices, Samhain, etc) to their associated sites and monuments.
This allows users to find any site or monument associated with a specific mythical character, tale or event.
These connections create route-ways for visitors to experience our ancient monuments - not just as singular entities, but as parts of a mythological narrative that stretches back over 5000 yrs and extends right across the island of Ireland.
This data-set has the ability to create numerous itineraries/products that promote rural tourism development while giving the visitor/user a centralised system by which to access & engage with it.
By reconnecting the myths to the monuments we are raising the profile of both our built heritage and our literary/mythological heritage, and ultimately Ireland, as one of the world’s premier heritage destinations.
